Dylan had his first Tumbling class this morning. There are seven girls plus Dylan.
The teacher started by asking the kids to sit in a circle and listen to her. They all ended up sitting right next to her, facing the same direction!
The class started a bit slow. Stretching and some yoga poses. Dylan ran off to play with a ball several times during the stretching phase. I've noticed he seems to do better if he sits right next to the teacher and can get more specific direction, instead of being addressed as one of the group.
What ensued was a bit chaotic, but I hope, as the kids become more familiar with the routine, it will be more engaging for them. They lined up on a green mat and restlessly waited for their turn. Two at a time, the kids rolled like a pencil down the mat to the end, where they were to sit and wait for everyone else.
Yeah, right.
Dylan took his turn by running down the mat, and back, and down again, got bumped over by someone who was actually rolling, and back again. There were several other kids not following directions, so I didn't feel too terrible about it, but it was obvious that Dylan has LOTS of energy. By the end of the class, all of the other mom's knew Dylan's name.
They did other activities that involved waiting your turn. That is tough for kids this age, and I had to go sit near Dylan and hang on to his shirt for awhile. I'm hoping as the session goes on, he'll be able to reign in his need to go now, now, now.
They had a few more structured activities, then they had free time. Dylan spent time crawling in the tunnel, jumping on the trampoline, crawling up the ramp the girls were using to do sommersaults, and walking on the shiny half circle thingies.
There was only one teacher for the eight kids, so the moms pitched in and helped out at times. They finished by playing with the parachute. Then they were instructed to put their shoes on, and to pick out a lollipop. Dylan could barely sit still while I put his shoes on!
On the way home I asked him what his favorite part of class was. He said the lollipop. I asked him besides the lollipop and he didn't have an answer. Although later on the ride home he mentioned pencil rolling, so maybe we'll practice that at home a little.
I think it is going to be a fun 15 weeks, and I hope at the end Dylan's waiting, turn taking and listening skills are stronger!
