Squash!

I've been attempting to feed Brody various thicknesses of rice cereal, to no avail. He doesn't seem to like the texture, and pushes it out of his mouth. I've tried different spoons, let him dip his fingers into it, morning feeding, afternoon feeding, evening feeding, everything I could think of. He is obviously wanting to eat more than just formula, so I decided to go right for the baby food and forget the rice cereal.

When we got home from the cabin last night I tried squash.

Looks promising...he's excited...

Yuck...not so good...

Oh but wait! He did like it after all! He ended up eating half the container, and was grabbing my hands trying to get more in his mouth. I think he's also enjoying chewing on the rubberized spoon.

And here we have a satisfied customer, in need of some spray-n-wash! I think this is one of my favorite pictures I've taken on Brody.

60th at the Cabin

Last weekend we got together at the cabin with Brian's family to celebrate his Grandparents 60th Anniversary. Diane and her siblings and all of their kids and grandkids were there. This was the first time they had met Brody, and they were anxious to hold him and play with him. It was a nice break for us!

Brian's cousin Nicole and her daughter Paige played with Brody a lot!

On Friday evening, Grandma and Grandpa were taped while answering questions about their life together. Those of us with kids spent that time in the basement. Dylan grew antsy, so we pulled up the Thomas the Tank Engine website. It entertained Dylan, Paige and Tyson. Dylan played so well with the bigger kids. It was very nice to not break up any squabbles all weekend.

On Saturday, we took family pictures. The color scheme was red, white and blue. I didn't have many pictures where everyone was looking at the same camera at the same time, but this one did turn out.

All four of the Great-Grandchildren posed together, and they cooperated very well! I can't remember if I bribed Dylan with popsicles before or after this picture.
And here is Mr. D with his frequent companion, Mr. Potato Head. He is occupied for long periods of time by this toy, and it's tempting to buy one for our house. But then I suppose he won't be as exciting if there are limited opportunities to play with him!

Vilas Zoo

First, the update on Dylan's arm: he's fine. Using it now like an old pro.

Brian is out of town this week, and my mom is here to help! She came on Monday afternoon and I'm so glad she's here.

We went up to the Vilas Zoo in Madison yesterday. It was a beautiful day for the zoo! Here is a photo of the two boys riding in their stroller:

Feeding the goats

Awww, isn't this cute?

Dylan, joining the March of the Penguins

My little baby, enjoying the attention

The children's area at the zoo has a little train - Dylan went for a ride with Oma. He was talking about it all day today!

And of course we rode the carousel too! Last year when Brian and I took him, Dylan didn't enjoy the carousel ride at all. This year he seemed to enjoy it a bit more. He wanted to ride the horse, but there was only one, so he opted for the tiger instead.

Ahhh, more attention!

One Armed Bandit

Dylan's condition has certainly improved from yesterday. He is continuing to have pain, but it's hard to tell if it's in his elbow, shoulder, or ? He has been doing a mean impression of Bob Dole today, and his arm is just hanging by his side. Even playing with his trains wasn't enough to convince him to stretch his right arm out a bit.

I have noticed he's used the arm a few times however, and I think it must be when he "forgets" it hurts. I'm keeping him juiced up with a dose of Ibuprofen every six hours for the next twenty-four, and by tomorrow I hope he'll be doing even better.

Learn from my mistake

Oh my poor baby...
Tonight after dinner I was walking/running with Dylan. As usual he wanted to jump in the five inch deep water in the gutter, and as usual I tried to convince him otherwise. I grabbed his arm, and suggested we jump over the water like frogs. We jumped...well, I jumped and he stayed put...but I had his arm...and heard and felt a pop. Immediately he started crying. He grabbed his arm and cried, and asked me to carry him. I knew then it was bad news.

He cried the entire walk up the block, and held his arm like it was broken. I tried touching it, but he howled every time I touched his arm. We got home, and I tried to get him to reach for something with his right arm, which he was gingerly holding by his side. He did reach for something, but instantly cried. Off to urgent care we went.

The doctor immediately felt his shoulder and elbow, and said his elbow was dislocated. He popped it back into place, and we had to wait a few minutes so the doctor could observe Dylan. Dylan just wasn't getting any better, still crying over the pain, and not using his arm. The doctor then sent us for x-rays of Dylan's hand, wrist, forearm, elbow, upper arm, shoulder and clavicle bones. All okay. The doctor was a bit perplexed as to why Dylan would still be having so much pain. He said he was certain it was an elbow dislocation, he sees five of them a week. He sent us home with a dose of Ibuprofen and told me to call in the morning if Dylan still was in pain.

We got home and I told Dylan he had been very brave tonight. In the midst of tears and howls of pain, he said to me "You brave and clever...you are a really useful engine." That of course, is the last line of Dylan's favorite book, Thomas and the Castle.

Toe Tapper

I'm afraid Dylan is going to be giving up naps soon. That's not good...for me! I NEED for him to take a nap. Today during his nap time, I was in the office working on my scrapbooks. I vaguely heard the gate being knocked on or over, but it wasn't a big enough noise to make me think I should go upstairs. Pretty soon I heard tap, tap, tap, tap. I thought hmmm, that's a new noise. Dylan must be laying on his bed, tapping the wall with his feet.

I continued to work on my book for at least another five minutes. I turned around to cut a piece of paper, and there was Mr. Dylan, sitting on the bottom step, tap, tap, tapping his toes on the tile floor! I guess the noise I heard was him knocking down the gate (yes...he's gated for "quiet" time right now, otherwise he digs around in the bathroom closet for Band-Aids, a.k.a. "bandies." and other exciting things). When I finally noticed him, his face lit up and he came over to give me a big hug. I just thought it was so cute that he was waiting patiently for me to notice him, tap, tap, tapping his toes...

Fun Stuff

Just trying out my new Blog signature...  :)

5 Months Old

Brody is five months old today , and crabby as ever. I'm hoping he gets a tooth soon and maybe that will put an end to the fussiness. He's also got a bit of a cold and a mild fever that comes and goes. I guess all of those things combined would be enough to make me crabby too. He is such a drooler, and his hands are usually in his mouth, so there's slobber everywhere Brody goes.

Yesterday we had one of those diaper incidents I'll not soon forget. As I was pulling down Brody's pants, I realized my fingers were dragging through thick gooey baby poo. It had filled his pant leg. UGH. During the half-second I stood there assessing the situation, Brody managed to put his hands in it and, grabbed a fistful and squeezed. Oozing gooey poo. Ugggghhh. Then, while I was re-assessing the situation, trying to decide what to wipe first, Brody did a neat trick; he pulled his feet up to his head and grabbed his sock with his ooey gooey poo hand. Hmmm, now we really have a problem. Where do you start? I mean really, my hand is covered in it, his pants and onesie are covered, his sock and his hand are all covered in baby poo. That's where the excitement ended though. I managed to clean one thing at a time and we both survived. Until next time...

On a less disgusting but still oozing note, Dylan played with Play-Doh this morning. In the first picture he has a few fresh cans of it, and as he stacked them up he told me they were wheels, then a van, then a tow truck. Very creative.

And in this picture, he told me the big chunk of mixed together Play-Doh was a house.
